FATAL HOUSE FIRE IN LOWER FRANKFORD
3/8/10 - Company 48 was dispatched at 5:39 a.m. for an unknown type fire outside in the area of Old Mill Road & Wildwood Road in Lower Frankford Township (Box 148-01). Engine 148 and the Chief arrived on the scene in the 500 block of Old Mill Road to find a two-story dwelling with an attached garage fully involved, and requested headquarters to dispatch first and second alarm assignments. With the first attack line into the structure, crews discovered the body of one class-4 patient. With strucutural collapse of the back half of the dwelling and unsafe interior support walls, defensive attack of the fire was used. Fill-site was established approx. one-mile from the scene and tankers were utilized to shuttle water from a nearby pond. Approximately 10 area fire departments, County Coroner, PA State Police Fire Marshal, Carlisle EMS, and Red Cross assissted at the scene. Co.48 apparatus that responded to the scene included E-148, E-248, QRS 48 and Utility 48. Cleared the scene at 12:44 p.m. Our thanks to Mt. Holly Springs Co.36 for the transfer to our station and assistance with clean-up.

BUSY TRANSFER TO CO.47
2/26/10 - Dispatched at 7:40 a.m. for a Transfer to Company 47's station. (FHC busy with multi-vehicle pile ups and numerous accidents on the PA Turnpike as a result of snow & high winds with white-out conditions).
While enroute for the Transfer, Engine 148 was called out at 7:57 a.m. to an auto accident on Rt.233 - Centerville Road in West Pennsboro Twp. Units arrived with a pickup truck into a pole. Placed available at 8:27 a.m. and returned to Station 47.
At 10:36 a.m., Engine 148 responded to an Automatic Fire Alarm in West Pennsboro Township at Swaim Health Center (Green Ridge Village Nursing Facility) and cancelled before arrival on the scene. Was then released from the Transfer and headed home at 11:26 a.m.

UPPER FRANKFORD ACCIDENT
2/18/10 - Dispatched at 7:46 a.m. for an auto accident in Upper Frankford Township on Enola Road near the intersection of Church of God Road (Box 48-01). Engine 148 and QRS 48 arrived on the scene with an SUV that had sheared off a pole and came to rest in the field. All occupants including two small children were out of the vehicle, with no injuries. Units cleared the scene at 8:11 a.m.

ACCIDENT IN LOWER FRANKFORD
2/15/10 - Dispatched at 10:15 a.m. to an auto accident in Lower Frankford Township on Bobcat Road near the intersection of Long Lane (Box 148-01). Engine 148 and QRS 48 arrived on the scene to find the vehicle on its side with all occupants out of the vehicle with no injuries. Co.40 EMS checked out all occupants and units cleared the scene at 10:50 a.m.

2010 WINTER STORMS
2/6/10 & 2/10/10 - STORM PREPAREDNESS : Winter Storms passed through our region with significant snow accumulations and high winds that kept all area emergency responders busy. Co. 48's members manned their station through out both storms and provided assistance to the community as needed. Photos by UFFC members.

UPPER FRANKFORD ACCIDENT
12/31/09 - Dispatched at 4:42 a.m. for an Auto Accident in Upper Frankford Township on Bloserville Road near the intersection of Potato Road (Box 48-01). Engine 148 & QRS 48 arrived on the scene to find a vehicle off of the roadway that had overturned and then landed upright. Co.48 assisted by Rescue 47 personnel with roof removal and extrication of patient. Twp patients were transported by Newville and Carlisle EMS. Cleared the scene at 5:53 a.m.

HOUSE FIRE IN MIDDLESEX TOWNSHIP
12/20/09 - Dispatched at 11:04 a.m. to a House Fire at 320 Enola Road in Middlesex Township (Box 239-04). Engine 248 was called on 2nd alarm assignment and assisted with water supply, while Co.48 personnel assisted with salvage and overhaul. E-248 then transfered to Co.39's station and was placed available at 14:23 p.m.

WEST PENNSBORO ACCIDENT ON RT. 641
12/20/09 - Dispatched at 7:11 a.m. to an accident on Rt.641 (500 block of Carlisle Road) in West Pennsboro Township (Box 46-03). Units arrived on the scene to find a pick-up truck off the roadway and into a tree. One patient transported by Co.47 Ambulance. Engine 148 was placed available upon arrival on the scene and Utility 48 assisted with traffic control. Cleared the scene at 7:23 a.m.

AUTO ACCIDENT IN UPPER FRANKFORD
11/30/09 - Dispatched at 12:17 p.m. for an Auto Accident at the intersection of Frytown and Grahams Woods Roads in Upper Frankford Township (Box 48-01). Engine 148, Engine 248, and QRS 48 arrived on the scene to find a vehicle on its side, down over the embankment, and two patients confined in the vehicle. With assistance from Co.47, vehicle was stabilized and victims removed with minor injuries. Cleared the scene at 12:47 p.m.

HOUSE FIRE IN NORTH NEWTON
10/21/09 - Dispatched at 4:05 a.m. for a House Fire at 85 Worthington Road in North Newton Township (Box 247-01). First firefighter on the scene, advised headquarters that they had a working fire. Upon arrival on the scene, Engine 248 set up their portable pond, established the dump-site for water supply, and provided manpower for extinguishment and overhaul. Engine 148 set up the fill-site operations at the pond located at the Big Spring Fish & Game on Steelstown Road and filled nine tanker loads. Company 48 cleared their assignments at 7:54 a.m. Our thanks to Shermans Dale for Tanker 134 transfer to our station and their assistance with our equipment clean up.

CO.48 FIREFIGHTER RECOGNIZED FOR SAVING A LIFE

10/16/09 - A special gathering was held recently at the Shippensburg EMS Station, to honor local emergency personnel that were involved in saving the life of Harold "Bruce" McNew. On April 21, 2009, Mr. McNew was at the Shippensburg American Legion when he collapsed and went into a full cardiac arrest. Upper Frankford Firefighter Rick Shoemaker was near Mr. McNew when he collapsed, and immediately started CPR. Vigilant Hose Co. 52 & Shippensburg EMS arrived and administered a shock to Mr. McNew by the use of their A.E.D. (Automated External Defibrilator) and was then transported to Chambersburg Hospital. For his performance, Rick received a Letter of Commendation and a pin from the Emergency Services Health Federation of PA. Great job to everyone involved!

UPPER FRANKFORD JOINS FORCES WITH THE BIG SPRING FIRE PREVENTION TASK FORCE!

10/10/09 - Along with visiting local elementary schools for Fire Prevention Week, the Big Spring Fire Prevention Task Force Committee officially kicked off their SMOKE DETECTOR CAMPAIGN. The Task Force Committee received a Federal Grant for the smoke detectors that have a 10-year lithium battery. The local fire companies within the Big Spring School District are offering any homeowner who is in need of the free detectors, to contact your local fire company by phone or email at the contact information listed below. The fire company will then contact you and make arrangements to come and install the detectors. Special thanks to Dave Twining of West Pennsboro Vol. Fire Co. for writing the grant.

UFFC MOVES BACK INTO STATION
9/12/09 - After a four-day process, the new epoxy flooring for the whole station was completed and the Company was able to "move" back in on Saturday after returning from the County Convention. It looks great and a job well done!

Co.48 BRINGS HOME TWO AWARDS FROM COUNTY CONVENTION PARADE
9/12/09 - UFFC emptied the station to attend the 82nd Annual Cumberland County Volunteer Firefighters Assoc. Convention held in Shippensburg and hosted by Cumberland Valley Hose Company No.2. We were very pleased to come home with two awards for both of our Engines. Engine 148 earned the KME Manufacturer's Award and Engine 248 was awarded 1st place for "Best Appearing and Most Functional Tanker " (2000 gal. and above) category. Congratulations to all of the award winners and thanks to CV Hose for hosting the event. Our special thanks also to West Pennsboro Vol. Fire Co. for covering our station while we attended the Convention.

9/4/09 - Bloserville Road at the PA Turnpike bridge in West Pennsboro Township is now open.


Co.48 ATTENDS CAMPGROUND CARNIVAL
8/15/09 - Upper Frankford Twp. Fire Co. was invited by Dogwood Acres Campground to participate with their Community Day Carnival. The day was full of family fun that included games, face painting, live music, auctions, and great food. Proceeds from the event benefit the "Ronald McDonald House Charities". Company 48 participated by taking Engine 148, Engine 248, QRS 48, and Utility 48 to the event. Children as well as the adults enjoyed the opportunity to experience the hands-on approach of being able to operate a handline, wear the bunker gear, sit in one of the big rigs, engage the siren, operate the hydraulic cutters and spreaders (some may call them the "Jaws of Life"), or even listen to their heartbeat with a stethoscope. Others enjoyed seeing the apparatus up close and asking questions about the equipment that we carry. It was a great opportunity to visit with our community and to give them a little sense as to what we do on calls when a 9-1-1 call goes out. Our "Thanks" to Charles & Lucille Strub (owners of Dogwood Acres) for inviting us out for a fun day!

UFFC BRINGS HOME A TROPHY FROM PATH VALLEY
8/13/09 - Upper Frankford Twp. Fire Co. traveled to Franklin County on Thursday evening and attended the 102nd Annual Path Valley Picnic Parade with Engine 148 and Brush 48. Our crews were excited to return home with a 1st Place Trophy for Engine 148 in winning the "Best Appearing Engine / Rescue" category. Our thanks to Fannett-Metal Fire & Ambulance for sponsoring and planning of this annual parade, and the support of the local commmunity.

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT IN LOWER MIFFLIN
8/8/09 - Dispatched at 13:55 hrs. to 600 Hunters Road in Lower Mifflin Township for a Motorcycle Accident. Engine 148 and QRS 48 arrived on scene with patient care intiated by Company 47's Ambulance crew. Co. 48 and Rescue 47's personnel assisted with Landing Zone Operations for Life Lion activation located in the field adjacent to the accident scene. Cleared the box at 14:33 hrs.

3RD ALARM HOUSE FIRE IN PENN TWP.
7/29/09 - Dispatched at 13:48 hrs. to 1751 Pine Road in Penn Township for a House Fire. Call was located across from Co.50's station with fire showing from the structure. Engine 248 responded and upon arrival, staged at Co.50's parking area as standby for water supply. Cleared the scene at 15:55 hrs.

ANNUAL FIREMAN'S FAIR
July 23, 24, 25 - RAIN, RAIN, AND MORE RAIN!!! With torrential down-pours and thunderstorms that passed through every night, we were pleased to still be able to have a profitable Fair. We greatly appreciate and thank our community for coming out and supporting us despite the weather conditions. We would also like to especially thank all of our volunteers who worked so hard in making it possible for us to hold this annual event.

10th ANNUAL CAR SHOW
GREAT SHOW!
7/25/09 - It was such a beautiful day for our Car Show to be held, which turned out to be the best show we've ever had. With the help of the following sponsoring car clubs - "Toys of Time Kruzers" and "Drifters Street Rod Club", we had an amazing 103 registered vehicles that turned out with many different makes and models of cars, trucks, and motorcycles for everyone to admire. A special thanks goes out to all of the trophy sponsors, DJ Steve Cohick, our volunteers, sponsoring car clubs, and to those who donated items for the Chinese Auction and door prizes. We also thank all of the participants for attending and congratulations to all of the winners!

VEHICLE INTO A MOBILE HOME
7/15/09 - Dispatched at 19:14 hrs. for a vehicle into a mobile home at Mountain View Terrace in Upper Frankford Township. Engine 248 arrived on the scene to find a van that had hit two parked vehicles and a metal pole before coming to rest against the front of the mobile home with minor damage. Checked the scene for hazards and requested EMS and QRS 48 to the scene for a foot injury to an occupant of the vehicle. Cleared the scene at 19:44 hrs. Assisted by PA State Police and Ambulance Co.47.

ACCIDENT IN LOWER FRANKFORD
7/9/09 - Dispatched at 8:53 am to the scene of an accident involving a municipal mowing tractor and a pick-up truck, located in the 300 block of Burgners Road in Lower Frankford Township. Engine 148 and Utility 48 responded and Co.48 personnel provided assistance with a fluid spill and with traffic control. Cleared scene at 10:41 am.

7/7/09 - Dispatched at 11:01 am for second alarm assignment to the scene of the House Fire at 2061 Longs Gap Road in North Middleton Township. Engine 148 responded and Co.48 provided manpower to the roof of the structure for extinguishment in the attic and assisted with vertical ventilation. Cleared scene at 1:13 pm.

HOUSE FIRE IN WEST PENNSBORO
6/12/09 - Dispatched at 11:40 am to a House Fire at 34 W. Main Street in Plainfield, West Pennsboro Township. Responding units upon arrival, found fully involved structure with smoke showing from all sides.
UFFC responded with Engine 248 and provided manpower for extinguishment and mop-up.

COMMUNITY DAY IN WEST PENNSBORO
6/6/09 - West Pennsboro Township held its 1st Community Day at the West Pennsboro Fire Company and Township Park. UFFC participated in the event along with Companies 40, 46 & 47. It was a great turnout by the community, with lots of area vendors on hand, free door prizes, and consession stand provided by West Pennsboro Fire Co. Activities for the day included vehicle rescue demo, smoke trailer, fire extinguisher demo, horse rides, dancing dogs, child ID's, hands-on handline fun, water rescue display, fire prevention handouts, and "Smokey the Bear" and "Red Robin" made special appearances through out the day. Thanks to West Pennsboro Township for the planning of a very enjoyable day!

VEHICLE OVERTURNED IN UPPER FRANKFORD
5/16/09 - Distpatched at 1612 hrs for an Auto Accident with vehicle overturned at 355 Mohawk Road in Upper Frankford Township. Engine 148 and QRS 48 arrived on the scene to find a Trailblazer on its roof and down an embankment. Driver was out of the vehicle on her own and transported by Ambulance Co. 47. Was assisted on the scene by Rescue 47 and PA State Police. Cleared scene at 1700 hrs.

FARM EQUIPMENT FIRE IN WEST PENNSBORO
5/13/09 - Dispatched at 2242 hrs to West Pennsboro Township, 19 Goodyear Road on 46-03 Box for a tractor fire. Chief 47 arrived on the scene and reported a well involved combine on fire. Engine 248 and Brush 48 arrived and provided manpower assistance to companies 46 & 47.
